Hajj, Day by Day

From Makkah to Mina, Arafat and Madinah — the rites of Hajj unfold over the fixed days of Dhul-Hijjah, each with its own place and purpose.

  1. Day 1· 8 Dhul-Hijjah
    Makkah → Mina

    Tarwiyah — Departure to Mina

    Pilgrims in Ihram proceed to the tent city of Mina, where they spend the day and night, preparing for the days ahead.

  2. Day 2· 9 Dhul-Hijjah
    Arafat · Muzdalifah

    The Day of Arafah

    The central rite of Hajj — standing at Arafat in prayer and remembrance (Wuquf). After sunset, pilgrims move to Muzdalifah and spend the night under the open sky, gathering pebbles for the Jamarat.

  3. Day 3· 10 Dhul-Hijjah
    Mina · Makkah

    Rami, Sacrifice & Tawaf al-Ifadah

    Stone the largest pillar (Jamarat al-Aqaba), offer the sacrifice, then shave or shorten the hair (Tahallul). Pilgrims return to Makkah to perform Tawaf al-Ifadah around the Kaaba.

  4. Days 4–5· 11–12 Dhul-Hijjah
    Mina

    The Days of Tashreeq

    Each day, stone the three Jamarat in Mina after midday. On the 12th, pilgrims may depart Mina for Makkah before sunset.

  5. Day 6· 13 Dhul-HijjahOptional
    Mina

    The Final Stoning

    For those who remain in Mina, a final stoning of the three Jamarat before returning to Makkah.

  6. Farewell
    Makkah

    Tawaf al-Wada

    Before leaving Makkah, pilgrims perform the farewell circumambulation around the Kaaba — the final rite of the Hajj journey.

    Madinah

    Madinah & Masjid An-Nabawi

    Many pilgrims visit Madinah before or after the Hajj days, praying at the Prophet’s Mosque and visiting the Rawdah.
